Ex-Rangers midfielder Lee McCulloch has urged his former club to tie down John Lundstram to a new contract.

The 30-year-old is currently set to leave on a free transfer when his current deal expires in June, but McCulloch says the former Sheffield United player has performed to a good enough standard to warrant an extension:

“He gets what the club is all about, which is the biggest thing for me. He loves playing for Rangers. I’ve spoken to him a few times and he’s a real good, grounded boy. It makes a massive difference. John’s got that mentality though where he loves to win, hates to get beat and performs consistently week in, week out.”

“He’s been an easy target at times when he’s actually been playing okay. But when he’s on his game he’s one of the best. Personally, I’d love to see him stay, but I don’t know if that will happen. His contract is up at the end of the season. But I think he’s been good enough to say you should try to keep a hold of him. That’s only my opinion, though, that’s down to the powers that be. But he gets the demands of the fans so, for me, it would be good to keep hold of him.”

Lundstram is still a key player for Phillipe Clement

The midfielder has been almost ever-present since the new manager arrived at the club back in October. He has made 44 appearances in all competitions this season; 41 of which have been starts.

With that being the case, you would think Clement is fighting his corner to get the player a new contract. However, the club’s board may have other ideas.

What has Lundstram had to say about his Rangers future?

The Englishman spoke about his desire to stay at Ibrox at the beginning of January. He said he would “love” to put pen to paper on a new deal.

Despite some rumours last month that Lundstram was close to agreeing terms, nothing has been heard since then, suggesting the two sides are still quite far apart.
