Rangers are interested in signing Burnley centre-back Bobby Thomas, according to journalist Alan Nixon.

The Light Blues are, however, not the only team pursuing the 22-year-old, with English Championship sides Queens Park Rangers and Cardiff City also thought to be targeting the player.

Thomas has only made one appearance for Burnley, with most of his senior experience coming during loan spells away from Turf Moor.

The defender spent six months with Barrow during the 2020/21 season, while he went on to play for Bristol Rovers in the first half of last campaign.

Gers boss Michael Beale and the scouting department were, though, probably more impressed with his time at Barnsley, who he joined on a temporary basis at the start of this year.

Thomas narrowly missed out on promotion

Barnsley finished 4th in League One, securing themselves a playoff spot, but they lost 1-0 in the final at Wembley to Sheffield Wednesday.

Thomas played a key role in helping his team reach that point, making 25 appearances for the Tykes after arriving in January.

Rangers are looking to strengthen their options at centre-half

Following the departure of Filip Helander on a free transfer, the Bears have only three senior centre-backs in Connor Goldson, John Souttar and Ben Davies.

Leon King is also someone that Beale can call upon but, at 19 years of age, there are question marks over whether he can be used on a regular basis due to his lack of experience.

A fourth senior centre-half is, therefore, being considered. Nottingham Forest’s Jonathan Panzo has been looked at, although there appears to be some hesitancy about paying the transfer fee required to bring him in.

Thomas is likely seen as a cheaper alternative to Panzo, who could do a job in terms of being able to come into the team and be trusted to perform when needed.
