Romano Confirms Rangers Are Among “Several Clubs” Who Could Sign Dutch U21 Star Before Transfer Deadline

Rangers are one of “several clubs” interested in signing Ajax left-back Anass Salah-Eddine, according to journalist Fabrizio Romano.

The Gers and Torino are both said to be weighing up loan offers for the Netherlands Under 21 international, although other teams could yet join the race before next week’s transfer deadline.

Ajax are reportedly willing to let Salah-Eddine leave on a temporary basis this month, which would make him a realistic target for Phillipe Clement’s side.

The club could potentially pay as much as £5.7m for FC Nordsjaelland midfielder Mohamed Diomande so any further additions would have to be low-cost deals.

What do fans need to know about Salah-Eddine?

The Dutchman is not a product of the Ajax youth system, having joined from AZ Alkmaar in 2018. He made his senior debut on the last day of the 2021/22 Eredivisie campaign, playing the last 25 minutes of the 2-2 draw against Vitesse Arnhem.

After signing a new contract, Salah-Eddine was loaned out to FC Twente last season, going on to make 17 appearances in all competitions, but making only 9 starts. The fullback returned to Ajax last summer to become part of the first-team setup but he has struggled to hold down a place in the starting lineup.

Salah-Eddine started the 4-1 win over Heracles on the opening day of this campaign, providing an assist. However, he was hauled off at half-time against Excelsior in the subsequent league fixture and he hasn’t started another game for the senior side since then.

Why are Rangers interested in the defender?

There has been a lot of speculation about Ridvan Yilmaz’s future at the club, with teams keen to take him back to Turkey. With Borna Barisic also out of contract at the end of the season, a new left-back will have to be signed sooner rather than later.

Based on Romano’s information, it appears that Salah-Eddine is one of the options under consideration.
