Three PROs And Two CONS To Rangers Selling Nathan Patterson To Everton

The Ibrox Stadium.

Rangers have agreed to sell right-back Nathan Patterson to Everton, subject to personal terms and a medical.

It is believed that the Gers will receive £12m upfront for the 20-year-old, with an additional £4m in add-ons, making it a club-record sale.

Patterson has been heavily linked with Everton since last summer, in addition to other clubs including Manchester United, but supporters will be disappointed that such a promising young talent has been let go.

Press the next page as we address some of the pros and cons to Patterson being sold.

PRO – Performance Related Bonuses Could Prove Lucrative

The deal for Patterson could earn the Light Blues as much as £16m if the right-back performs well for Everton over the next few seasons.

Considering the highest fee that Rangers have received previously was for Alan Hutton, when the fullback moved to Tottenham for £9m all the way back in 2008, then it shows you the significance of the Patterson transfer.

CON – Short Term Thinking Has Prevailed

While captain James Tavernier is still performing very well, and he deserves to be ahead of Patterson in the pecking order at the moment, he is 30 years of age.

It won’t be long before his performance levels drop, and the Gers had a perfect replacement waiting in the wings, who could have been first choice for the next ten years.

PRO – Money Up Front For A Talented (Yet Relatively Unproven) Player

It is fair to say that Rangers’ finances were in need of a boost, and selling Patterson is a great way of balancing the books without having to sacrifice a more established first-team player.

Even though the right-back has great potential, there is still some uncertainty over how he will develop. There is no guarantee he will be worth more in the future so selling now could prove to be the right decision.

CON – There Were Other Players Who Could Be Sold

Patterson is not the only member of the squad who is valued highly by other clubs. Ianis Hagi, Glen Kamara and even Alfredo Morelos could have been sold for the same amount.

While it could be argued that all three are more important than Patterson for the first team currently, his ceiling is likely to be higher than all of them.

PRO – Van Bronckhorst Can Reinvest Some Of The Funds To Strengthen

While it is not likely that the Rangers boss will get all (if not most) of the £12m from Patterson’s potential sale, it will give the Dutchman more flexibility in the transfer market.

Van Bronckhorst will want to shape the squad in his own image and he will surely be given some funds by the board to bring in signings of his own.
