Rangers remain “keen” on securing the services of Sunderland striker Ross Stewart, according to Sky Sports reporter Keith Downie.
The Scottish journalist, who has strong sources in the North East of England, claims that the Gers have joined Middlesbrough, Blackburn Rovers, Stoke, Crystal Palace and Brentford in pursuing the 26-year-old:
Middlesbrough are showing the strongest interest from a clutch of clubs wanting to sign Sunderland striker Ross Stewart.
Stewart could leave in January with Blackburn & Stoke among a number of Champ clubs – plus Rangers – keen.

Downie goes on to explain that Stewart’s contract situation could press Sunderland into selling the Scottish international during the January transfer window. The forward’s current deal expires in June, although there are reports that the Black Cats do have an option to extend his stay for a further twelve months, but it appears a sale next month is very possible:
Stewart is settled at Sunderland and wants to stay, but talks over a new contract have reached an impasse.
Other clubs offering significantly more in wages & #SAFC could cash in on him now.
If Stewart goes, Sunderland could replace him with Blackpool striker Jerry Yates.— Keith Downie (@SkySports_Keith) December 29, 2022
Stewart has been in excellent form this season, having racked up eight goals in 10 appearances, despite spending some time on the sidelines with injury. Whether Rangers will make an official approach for the player, we shall have to wait and see. Alfredo Morelos is out of contract next summer, and Kemar Roofe’s injury problems mean he can’t be relied upon, so manager Michael Beale may feel that a new addition up front is required.
