Rangers goalkeeper Allan McGregor’s decline has been starkly demonstrated by his underperformance in post-shot xG this season.
The stat rates each shot a keeper faces based on how likely it is to be saved and Patrick Caskie from the University of Edinburgh has shared a graph to show how far McGregor’s displays have dipped during the 2022/23 campaign:
McGregor's current underperformance is pretty stark; this current variance from 0 is the second largest, with only his immediate form after singing for us providing greater variance. His performances in 2018/19 and 19/20 were incredible, despite 20/21 yielding him Rangers POTY. pic.twitter.com/VsLwh6MbSr

McGregor’s form has been the subject of much debate among fans and the majority on Twitter firmly believe it is time for Gers to find a replacement:
should have let go a while ago.

I thought at the time that he won the 20/21 POTY mostly based on a few big saves against Celtic and Slavia around the time the votes were cast. It really should have been his last year.

Still shouldn’t be allowed to leave Rangers. The lad has forgot more than most goalkeepers know about playing between the sticks. Has to be kept on as GK coach as has learnt his trade under the best coaches Scotland has had.

Unfortunately you don’t need stats to see that mcgregor is done and in many ways I wish he had left on a high after 55 despite some amazing performances in Europe last season

Quite incredible how we all seen this mess coming last summer after the braindead contract extension yet those at the club didn’t. Truly baffling.

Manager Michael Beale has opted to rotate between McGregor and Jon McLaughlin since his appointment late last year, but it doesn’t appear that either player is up to the task.
It was a surprise that an approach for a new number one wasn’t made during the January transfer window, and supporters will now have to wait and see what decision is made at the end of the season.
