Leon King Admits To “Massive Learning Curve” After Rangers’ Chastening European Experience

Rangers centre-back Leon King says he has personally learned a lot from the club’s first foray into the Champions League group stages for over a decade.

The Light Blues lost all six of their matches, scoring just twice and conceding 22 times, giving them the worst record in the history of the competition. However, while King admits it was a challenging experience, he still believes the game time he was given will hold him in good stead going forward:

“It was a massive learning curve and it’s only going to stand me in good stead if we ever get to play those sort of games again. Hopefully, we do in the next year or two years. It was an up-and-down campaign in the Champions League for myself and the team. Results aside, it’s an amazing experience to play in the Champions League at such a young age, playing every single game.”

King was very much thrown into the deep end, with the Gers short of options at centre-back, so it was not entirely fair on him to play in all six group fixtures, facing teams such as Liverpool, Napoli and Ajax.

He seems to have taken the positives away from the experience, though, which is a good thing, and he will certainly know what level is required to compete at that level when Rangers qualify for the Champions League in future seasons.
