‘Could Fit The Bill’ Rangers Legend Names His Favourite For The Vacant Manager Hotseat

Rangers legend Kris Boyd has named Kevin Muscat as his personal favourite to be installed as the new Light Blues head coach in the wake of Michael Beale’s sacking.

He says that Muscat ‘ticks a lot of boxes’ and also points out that they can potentially get him very cheaply, as his contract at his current club is set to expire in the coming weeks.

Muscat wasn’t the only individual that Boyd put forth – he also named Pascal Jensen and Derek McInnes as possible replacement for the former QPR manager.

What did Kris Boyd write regarding Kevin Muscat?

Writing for the Scottish Sun, Boyd penned: “Having an identity and people inside the club who care is crucial. Whatever happens now, the Rangers board cannot afford to get it wrong and hiring the right character is vital. Kevin Muscat strikes me as someone who could fit the bill.

“He’s been linked with the job before and ticks a lot of boxes. He’s out of contract at Yokohama when the Japanese J-League finishes in a few weeks so compensation wouldn’t be an issue.

“Bodo Glimt’s Kjetil Knutsen and AZ Alkmaar’s Pascal Jansen are two other names mentioned, along with Derek McInnes. But whoever it is, they have to come into the club with a humility for Scottish football that Beale just didn’t have.”

Would Kevin Muscat be a good appointment for Rangers?

While Boyd’s enthusiasm for the potential appointment of Muscat seems apparent, Rangers fans should be aware that the Crawley-born head coach has no experience managing at the elite level – as such, bringing him as Beale’s replacement carries a risk with it.

With that being said, Muscat draws several comparisons to former Celtic boss Ange Postecoglou. Like the Tottenham manager, Muscat has only managed clubs outside of Europe’s biggest leagues, meaning he could come to the Ibrox Stadium with a fresh perspective and new ideas.

Postecoglou revolutionised Celtic upon his arrival in Glasgow – if he is anything to go by, then Muscat could potentially do the same thing for their Blue rivals.

Muscat currently manages Yokohama F. Marinos in the J-League – previously, he was the head coach of Melbourne Victory between the years of 2013 and 2019.
