‘I Wouldn’t Mind…’ Popular Pundit Names His Preferred Candidate For The Rangers Manager Job

Rangers icon Ally McCoist has said that he would like to see the Light Blues appoint former Chelsea boss Frank Lampard as their new head coach in the wake of Michael Beale’s sacking.

He acknowledged that the appointment of Lampard may not be ‘popular’ with the Rangers massive, but he cited the 45-year-old as a ‘young manager with a lot to prove’ and believes he could replicate the success of Steven Gerrard.

What did Ally McCoist say regarding Frank Lampard?

Speaking on TalkSPORT’s morning Radio show, McCoist said: “It’s an interesting one guys, it might not be a popular decision I’m going to make, but I wouldn’t mind Frank Lampard getting it to tell you the truth.

“There’s one or two names getting thrown about, I just think, I looked at the last time Steven [Gerrard] came up and was a success. I still see Frank in that sort of capacity, he’s a young manager with a lot to prove.

“Clearly, he does know the club that’s for sure but at the same time you know I don’t think it was a massive, massive surprise to see Michael [Beale] lose his job sadly. I think the Aberdeen game at home was the final one.”

When asked if he was in the running for the vacant Rangers head coach job, McCoist joked: “I’m out of it, I’m officially out.”

Would Frank Lampard be a good appointment for Rangers?

This is a tough question to answer as things stand. While Lampard’s recent managerial exploits have ended calamitously, the Gers have had success with young head coaches in the not-too-distant past.

Namely, the Light Blues enjoyed their most successful period in the last ten years under the stewardship of Steven Gerrard, who shares several similarities with Lampard.

While this seems like asking lightning to strike twice, it isn’t too preposterous. Lampard’s managerial career is currently hanging in the balance – taking the job at Rangers would be a last-chance saloon for the Chelsea legend.

With that being said, the Gers are in a shaky position as things stand. Bringing in the wrong man would be disastrous – it may be wise to appoint a manager with more experience of handling such complex and volatile situations.
