Five Free Agents Rangers Could Sign To Strengthen Their Attack Following Defoe’s Injury Setback

The Ibrox Stadium.

Rangers manager Steven Gerrard has confirmed that the Light Blues may step up their attempts to sign a new striker after Jermain Defoe suffered a hamstring injury in the 4-0 friendly win against Motherwell last night.

The Gers are now left with Alfredo Morelos as the club’s only fit senior forward, and Gerrard says they may need to go into the market to strengthen their options up front:

“I went on record last week to say I’d like to add in that area in terms of having extra firepower so who knows? It might push us even further in that direction to try and get something done.”

With just over a week to go before the start of the Scottish Premiership season, it won’t leave a lot of time to bring in a new addition.

There are, though, a number of free agents who could be snapped by Rangers. Press the next page as we look at five possible options.

Lyle Taylor

The former Charlton Athletic forward has been heavily linked with a move to Ibrox and it could well be the case that the Gers now may make a formal contract offer to the 30-year-old.

Taylor scored 11 goals for the Addicks last season in the English Championship so he does have the pedigree, but there is likely to be major competition for his signature.

Danny Loader

The 19-year-old left Reading at the end of last month. He has been scouted by the likes of Manchester United in the past and does have the potential to develop into a great forward in the future.

However, Loader’s goalscoring record since turning professional is not great, having scored just two goals in 35 appearances for the Royals.

Oumar Niasse

The Senegalese international was signed by Everton for £16m four and a half years ago and is still only 30 years of age. He didn’t quite cut it in the Premier League but he is a physically imposing forward who could give Gerrard a different option in attack.

Probably the biggest obstacle would be his wage demands, and whether he would be willing to come in simply to be a bit-part player.

Massimo Coda

A bit of a left-field choice but the Italian would be an interesting option. He was Serie B’s second top goalscorer in 2018/19 and he left Benevento at the end of June.

Coda is still only 31, and he would probably not command a high salary either, considering the Gers can offer wages higher than Serie B teams.

Sebastian Polter

The German target man spent a spell with QPR a few years back, but he is available after being let go by Bundesliga outfit Union Berlin. He did not play much last season, scoring two goals in 13 appearances, and he was actually suspended by his club after refusing to take a pay cut.

Polter could be considered as a potential candidate if, like with Niasse, Gerrard is looking for a forward with more physicality.
