Ally McCoist Praises Unheralded Rangers Star Who Made A “Fantastic” Intervention In Europa League Win

Former Rangers striker Ally McCoist believes centre-back Leon Balogun deserves more of the plaudits following his excellent display against Lech Poznan during the week.

The 32-year-old started the Europa League group game and helped the Light Blues keep yet another clean sheet. Speaking after the match, McCoist praised the defender for one key intervention, as well as stating his performances need to be recognised as much as the club’s other centre-backs:

“Connor Goldson and [Filip] Helander have been terrific but the big fellow who comes in again, Balogun. Al (Alan Stubbs) and I were talking – I’m surprised we never talk about him – he gets caught wrong-sided late on in the second-half but his speed gets him back and he makes a fantastic tackle.”

Balogun has been a great signing for the Gers so far. After joining on a free transfer in July, the Nigerian international has barely put a foot wrong. In his seven appearances for the Scottish club, his side have only conceded one goal, and that came in the 5-1 win over Motherwell last month.

Considering he was playing on loan at Wigan Athletic in the English Championship last season, the defender has really stepped up to the plate when called upon by manager Steven Gerrard.
