Alan Hutton Claims There Are Two Issues That May Stop Billy Gilmour From Making Rangers Return

There are two major obstacles in the way of Brighton midfielder Billy Gilmour moving back to Rangers, according to Alan Hutton.

The former Gers star claims Gilmour’s wages, combined with concerns about career progression, may stop the Scotland international from returning to Ibrox:

“You never know. I think the money situation is going to determine that. There is no getting away from the fact that he is a Rangers boy and it would be nice to see him back. Does he see that as a step back in his career? Only he can answer that.”

“He came through at Chelsea, went to Brighton and it has not quite worked. He is still very young and very talented with a lot to give. I think his next move is very important for him to go somewhere and get regular football so he can get back to the player we all know that he is.”

Hutton is certainly not ruling out Gilmour from moving back to Glasgow, but the situation is clearly quite complicated.

The 21-year-old only made the £8m move to Brighton last summer but he was unlucky in the fact that the manager who signed him, Graham Potter, left the Amex just a week after his arrival.

Gilmour’s current boss Roberto De Zerbi has used him sparingly, starting him on just four occasions in all competitions, and the feeling is that a departure this summer is on the cards.

Whether Rangers could afford to sign him, considering they will also have to spend a sizeable sum on keeping Malik Tillman at the club, it is debatable. There is, however, a possibility that a loan deal could be sorted out.
