4 Leaving, 1 Staying: We Assess The Futures Of Five Rangers Players Ahead Of The Summer

The Ibrox Stadium.

No matter what happens in the Europa League final against Eintracht Frankfurt, it is likely to be a big summer in terms of incoming and outgoings for Rangers.

It will be manager Giovanni van Bronckhurst’s first summer to stamp his own mark on the first-team squad, while there are a number of players currently at the club whose contract and loan deals expire at the end of May.

We have decided to look at what the future holds for Amad Diallo, Steven Davis, Aaron Ramsey, Allan McGregor and James Sands.

Press the next page as we assess whether these five Rangers stars will be staying or leaving in the coming weeks.

Amad Diallo

While the Manchester United loanee did get on the scoresheet against Dundee United at the weekend, it was just his second goal for the Gers since arriving in the January transfer window.

Van Bronckhorst has only given Diallo three league starts in total and that clearly suggests that the Scottish club won’t be looking to keep hold of him this summer.

Verdict: LEAVING

Steven Davis

The Northern Irishman has been a great servant to the club over two spells but all the signs point towards the midfielder leaving Ibrox next month when his contract expires.

While there have been announcements about contract extensions for both Scott Arfield and Alex Lowry in recent days, any talk about a new deal for Davis has been conspicuously absent. Knee problems meant he didn’t play a great deal for the first few months of this year but he has played more often recently. Whether he has done enough to stay for another year, though, it is debatable.

Verdict: LEAVING

Aaron Ramsey

Injuries have pretty much put pay to the Welshman’s chances of remaining in Glasgow. The former Arsenal player simply hasn’t been fit when needed.

When you consider that Rangers are only paying a small fraction of Ramsey’s wages as well, the cost of keeping him on a permanent basis, combined with his poor fitness record, means the midfielder will almost certainly return to Juventus this summer.

Verdict: LEAVING

Allan McGregor

Greegsy continues to start the majority of games for the Gers, with van Bronckhorst having consistently picked him ahead of Jon McLaughlin.

A close friend, former Rangers defender Alan Hutton, however, believes McGregor may well call it a day at the end of the season. The outcome of the Europa League final may also have a bearing but retirement does appear to be a distinct possibility.

Verdict: LEAVING

James Sands

The American’s loan expires at the end of next season, so there is no need to make a decision on his future, either way, this summer. He has struggled for game time but that is mainly due to the fact that he arrived midseason, with the Gers in the middle of an intense campaign both domestically and in Europe.

While the Light Blues could opt to cut his loan short, it is unlikely. Having someone like Sands in the squad, who can cover both in defence and midfield is very useful, and a final verdict can then be made next year on whether to sign him permanently.

Verdict: STAYING
