Who Are Lincoln Red Imps? Four Facts About Rangers’ Europa League Opponents

The Ibrox Stadium.

Rangers will face Gibraltar champions Lincoln Red Imps in the second qualifying round of the Europa League. It is a one-off game, rather than a two-legged affair, and the Light Blues will have to fly out for the away fixture.

The match is scheduled to be played on September 17th, with extra-time and penalties if the tie isn’t settled after 90 minutes. No doubt, the Gers will be looking to avoid a banana skin against part-time opposition.

The Red Imps were entered in at the first qualifying round stage and they have already beaten Luxembourg outfit Union Titus to reach this point of the competition. So what do we know about the Gibraltar club?

Press the next page as we go through four facts about the Gers’ next Europa League opponents.

Red Imps Are Perennial Winners Of The Gibraltar National League

Lincoln have only failed to win the league title on two occasions over the past 19 years. They now have a record 24 league championships and 17 domestic cup titles.

As the league is only semi-professional, though, they are very much punching above their weight when they enter European competitions.

They famously beat Old Firm rivals Celtic in a Champions League Qualifier

Brendan Rodgers’ first game in charge of Celtic was against Lincoln Red Imps and the Gibraltar club managed to upset the odds by winning the first leg of the Champions League second qualifying round clash 1-0.

They quickly came back to earth in the second leg at Parkhead, though, with the Hoops beating them 3-0.

Red Imps’ star striker actually has caps for Nigeria

The club’s best player is Sunday Emmanuel. The 28-year-old has four caps for his country and has a great deal of experience of playing in many different countries.

While the Nigerian has spent most of his career in Vietnam, he has also played in Austria and Portugal before moving to Gibraltar earlier this year.

They are managed by a former Benfica player

Lincoln actually have a Brazilian in charge of the team who has experience of playing at the highest level. William spent five years at Benfica in the early 90s where he won 2 league titles and a Portuguese cup.

The former defender also had spells in France, Spain and Portugal before hanging up his boots to become a manager. He was only appointed Red Imps’ boss in May, though, so he has only taken charge of one competitive fixture (the win against Union Titus).
