New Twist In Rangers’ Pursuit Of £6M Rated Defender

Twente have offered Rangers transfer target Gijs Smal a new contract, according to the Daily Record.

The 26-year-old has less than six months left on his current deal and it was assumed that he would leave for a low fee in January or join another team on a free transfer next summer.

However, Twente have now tabled a fresh offer to Smal as they try to keep one of their key players beyond the end of the season.

It remains to be seen whether the improved proposal will be accepted but it’s thought that the Gers will be watching developments closely.

Smal could be a replacement for Yilmaz

Reports in the Italian media have suggested that Ridvan Yilmaz is poised to join Serie A club Verona, which would leave manager Philippe Clement short of options at left-back.

Smal is likely to have been on the shortlist of options to replace the Turkish international but, if the Dutchman signs a new deal, his valuation could skyrocket. Until recently, Twente were asking for £6m for the defender, which would put him outside the Light Blues’ price range.

Are Rangers looking at other options?

Verona’s Josh Doig has been mentioned a few times as a possible target for the Gers. With Yilmaz moving to the Serie A club, some have put two-and-two together and assumed that the Scotland Under 21 international could make the switch in the other direction.

However, there is a lot of competition for Doig’s signature, with three other teams said to be competing for the player, including Torino, Monza and Leeds United.

For now, both Smal and Doig remain potential signings, but that could change depending on what happens in the coming days and weeks.
