REPORT: Rangers In Hunt For Ligue 2 Striker Regarding Transfer

Rangers are reportedly taking a look at 24-year-old hitman Josh Maja – they have been linked with him persistently over the past few months, but there is a catch [via Rangers Review].

At the end of the 2022/23 season, Bordeaux were relegated to Ligue 2. However, the relegation came as a result of their final game being abandoned, when a fan invaded the pitch.

Had they stayed up, they would have had the option to extend Maja’s contract for another year. Currently, the club are looking to appeal the result – should they be successful, they may remain a Ligue 1 outfit next season. As such, Maja’s future is currently up in the air.

Rangers are hunting for a striker this summer, as Alfredo Morelos looks set to leave the club in the transfer window – they have also been linked with moves for Lawrence Shankland, Cyriel Dessers and Sam Lammers.

Who else, besides Rangers, are interested in a move for Josh Maja?

Rangers are the only club who have been explicitly linked with a transfer for Josh Maja in recent weeks – however, back in April, both Almeria and Real Valladolid were thought to be interested in a move for the player [via Brila.net].

It is unknown if these two clubs are still interested in a transfer for Josh Maja – if they are, Rangers will face serious competition for his signature.

Josh Maja’s career so far

Born in Lewisham in 1998, Josh Maja had an eclectic youth career – he spent time in the academies of Crystal Palace, Fulham and Manchester City before finally settling at Sunderland.

He signed his first professional deal with the Black Cats in 2016. In total, he went on to make 41 appearances for Sunderland, scoring 18 goals.

In January 2019, he was snapped up by Bordeaux. He endured unsuccessful loan spells at Fulham and Stoke City, but began to hit a purple patch of form in the 2022/23 season.

Last season, he played in 37 games for Bordeaux, in which he scored 16 goals and registered six assists. As such, he has begun to attract attention from major clubs across Europe – with one of them being Rangers. Can they land their man?
