Ex-Rangers captain Barry Ferguson has praised John Lundstram for his consistency since the arrival of manager Philippe Clement.
Speaking on The Go Football Radio Show, Ferguson said the former Sheffield United player, who was signed by Steven Gerrard, has thrived in his role in front of the defence.
“Well since the new manager has taken over, the most consistent performer – and he may not have been man of the match every single game – John Lundstram stood out for me like a sore thumb.”
“He’s just played that pivot in front of the two centre-backs and he’s just simplified his game which I think has brought his game up a level or two.”
Lundstram has only failed to start 1 league game since Clement’s appointment
The Englishman’s importance to the current Light Blues boss is demonstrated by the fact that he has been named in the starting lineup for 16 of the Belgian 17 league matches in charge.
Lundstram missed the 2-0 win over Motherwell on Christmas Eve after picking up an injury.
Ferguson has called on Rangers to sort out Lundstram’s future
Considering he has been such a key pillar in Clement‘s plans, it is somewhat surprising that the Gers have allowed the 29-year-old’s contract to run down into its final few months. Ferguson believes the club must do all they can to extend the player’s stay at Ibrox:
“He’s one player I’m sure the manager will be desperate to get on a new contract because we all know he runs out of contract in the summer. Rangers will be desperate to get him tied down on a new deal.”
“He’s probably playing the best football since he signed for Rangers. He looks to me as well that he is a real leader on the pitch and the players are obviously looking up to him.”
