Ally McCoist Lavishes Praise On “One Of The Best Signings Rangers Have Made In Years”

Rangers legend Ally McCoist says his former club have found a true gem in goalkeeper Jack Butland.

The England international made the switch to Ibrox on a free transfer last summer and he has gone on to be a revelation during his first season with the Gers. Speaking to Jeff Stelling on his talkSPORT show, McCoist said the club’s No.1 has exceeded all expectations.

“Fabulous. It’s a funny one, Jeff. I wouldn’t say totally out of sight, out of mind, far from it because Scottish football does get reasonable coverage. But honest to god, just to reiterate what I said to you, he has been absolutely terrific. One of the best signings Rangers have made in years.”

Butland picked up his 19th clean sheet of the season during the 3-0 win over Livingston at the weekend, helping his team move within three points of league leaders Celtic with a game in hand.

Rangers had to fend off interest in January for the keeper

Butland was believed to be the subject of a significant bid from English Premier League strugglers Nottingham Forest before the transfer window shut last week.

However, Philippe Clement’s side reportedly refused to consider any bids for their No.1, as the former Crystal Palace and Manchester United player has quickly established himself as a crucial first-team player.

An England recall is on the horizon for Butland

Considering his outstanding form for the Light Blues, there is increasing speculation that the 30-year-old will be called up to the England squad by manager Gareth Southgate for the friendlies against Brazil and Belgium next month.

Butland has not been capped by the Three Lions since 2018 when he played the full 90 minutes against Switzerland in a 1-0 win. Based on his recent performances, though, a recall to the international setup is more than deserved.
