Leon Balogun has officially joined Rangers as their seventh signing of the summer, as per the Rangers official club website.

The Nigerian international, who has played for Rangers in the past, has been given a one-year deal by the club. While some may see this as short, given his age of 35 and extensive injury record, it’s understandable.

Nevertheless, if the Gers can keep Balogun fit and ready to play, he could be a real game-changer in the Scottish Premiership next season.

He has enjoyed a run with Rangers in the past, from 2020-2022. Many were sad to see him go upon his departure, including Gers legend Ally McCoist [via GOAL]. As such, now that he has return, his fans will be hoping he can hit the ground running once again.

How will Leon Balogun improve the way Rangers play?

Balogun is a grizzled, intelligent central defender – not only is he imperious in the air at 6ft 3, he is also a surprisingly technically gifted player. In the modern game, ball-playing defenders are becoming more and more prevalent – we think Balogun should be able to fulfil this role.

Not only this, but Balogun can also play at right-back if needed – he has demonstrated this previously during his first Light Blues stint. His pace has somewhat dwindled since the, however – he should only be played in that position if absolutely necessary.

Balogun initially joined Rangers back in 2020. His defensive capabilities were heavily lauded by the Gers fanbase – not only did he possess excellent positioning, he also showcased a gritty determination to defend his box.

Initially signed on a one-year deal, he impressed the Light Blues’ hierarchy so much that they decided to extend his contract for a further year. While at Rangers, Balogun won the Scottish Cup, the Scottish Premiership and he helped guide them to a Europa League final in 2022.
