REPORT: Rangers Target To Become Available For Free Transfer

Rangers transfer target Josh Maja will become available on a free transfer due to a clause in his contract at Bordeaux, according to the 4th Official on Patreon.

Bordeaux failed to win promotion back to Ligue 1 at the conclusion of the 2022/23 season – as such, Maja’s contract with the club will expire in the summer.

Bordeaux’s loss could become Rangers’ gain – but the Light Blues will need to act fast, as they are not the only club who are circling for his signature.

Both Almeria and Real Valladolid were linked with a move for the player back in April, but nothing has surfaced regarding their interest since then – nevertheless, the Gers should press on and try to complete a deal as soon as possible to avoid missing out.

What would Josh Maja add to the Rangers squad?

An explosive, blisteringly fast centre-forward, Maja appears to be an upgrade over the hit-and-miss Kemar Roofe. In addition to this, he is also six years younger than the former Leeds United man.

Last season, for Bordeaux, he found the back of the net on 17 occasions. Not only is he quick and skilful, he also boasts excellent movement off the ball and composed finishing to back it up.

As such, when all these attributes are combined, Maja makes for an excellent striker – even if he is an unproven goalscorer at Scottish Premiership level.

Josh Maja football career summary so far

Born in London in 1998, Josh Maja had a varied youth career – he spent time in the academies of Crystal Palace, Fulham and Manchester City before finally settling at Sunderland in 2015.

He signed his first professional deal with the Black Cats in 2016. In total, he went on to make 41 appearances for Sunderland, scoring 18 goals.

In January 2019, he was snapped up by Bordeaux. He endured unsuccessful loan spells at Fulham and Stoke City, but began to hit a purple patch of form in the 2022/23 season.

Last season, he played in 37 games for Bordeaux, in which he scored 16 goals and registered six assists. As such, he has begun to attract attention from major clubs across Europe – with one of them being Rangers. Can they land their man?
