Rangers are close to signing Oldham defender George Edmundson, according to reports in the Scottish media.

The centre-back has also been linked with Hull, Preston, Stoke and Sunderland but the Gers are said to be in pole position for the player.

A £450,000 fee has reportedly been agreed for Edmundson, with the 21-year-old already having been in Glasgow for a tour of the club’s training ground.

The defender has made 54 appearances in all competitions for Oldham this season, scoring two goals and providing five assists.

Manager Steven Gerrard is looking to strengthen his options at centre-back with Joe Worrall heading back to Nottingham Forest and Gareth McAuley unlikely to have his contract renewed.

Edmundson could be Rangers’ fourth signing of the summer, with Jake Hastie, Jordan Jones and Steven Davis having already been recruited.

A move for Birmingham City forward Greg Stewart is also on the cards, but despite reportedly agreeing personal terms, the club have yet to announce the 29-year-old’s switch to Ibrox.
