McCoist Issues His Verdict As Rangers Close In On Deal For 9 Cap England International

Rangers legend Ally McCoist has given his approval to his former club signing goalkeeper Jack Butland.

The Crystal Palace shot-stopper, who is currently on loan at Manchester United, will be available on a free transfer this summer and a move to Ibrox is looking increasingly likely. Asked for his thoughts about Butland’s potential switch to the Gers, McCoist said:

“I’d take that all day. Greegsy (Allan McGregor) has been a phenomenal servant to the club. I don’t know how Robby McCrorie is coming on but we definitely need a keep. I’m saying that although I haven’t seen him (Butland) for a while. But if he’s anything like he used to be I’d take him all day.”

The main concern about Butland is his lack of football. He missed the first half of the season with Palace due to a broken finger and, since moving to United in January, he hasn’t made a single appearance.

However, there is no disputing the fact that he is an experienced goalkeeper, having made 290 senior appearances at club level and being capped nine times by England.

Butland is still in his prime at 30 years of age, so his reflexes shouldn’t be in question, but manager Michael Beale will be taking a chance on someone who hasn’t been a number-one keeper for the best part of three years.
