Journalist Claims Rangers “Are Interested” In Recruiting Ex Chelsea Star On Free Transfer

Rangers “are interested” in signing former Chelsea and Crystal Palace centre-back Gary Cahill, according to journalist Owen O’Brien.

The 36-year-old is currently a free agent after leaving Bournemouth at the end of last season and O’Brien claims that the Light Blues have joined English Championship strugglers Coventry City in pursuing the player’s signature:

Cahill is very experienced, having won two Premier League titles and the Champions League during his time at Chelsea. He was also capped by England 61 times, playing at two World Cups.

However, the defender has not played a competitive game since January, after losing his place in Bournemouth’s team. Even if he was signed by Rangers, it’s highly unlikely that he would be ready to start games straight away.

Manager Giovanni van Bronckhorst also has plenty of other options available to him who can play at centre-half. In addition to Connor Goldson, James Sands and Ben Davies, he can call upon Leon King (as well as Fillip Helander when he returns to fitness).
