Gerrard Speaks On Who Will Take Rangers’ Next Penalty

Rangers manager Steven Gerrard has said that he will confer with captain James Tavernier about penalty-taking duties after the defender’s latest miss.

The right-back missed from twelve yards out against Feyenoord on Thursday night and also failed to convert when the Gers faced Progres Niederkorn during the first leg of the Europa League qualifier back in July.

Gerrard has said he will leave the final decision to Tavernier but he is expecting him to want to stay on penalties despite his recent misses:

“I’ll ask James if he’s confident that he’ll score the next one and does he want to take it. Then we’ll deal with the situation from there. I can’t see him saying ‘no’ but you’ll know when we get our next one. He’s still got a good record so it will boil down to him, what’s in him.”

Confidence is the key when it comes to stepping up to the spot, and while the 27-year-old converted a number of them last season, he hasn’t hit the back of the net with one so far this campaign.

It will be interesting to see what happens when Rangers next get awarded a penalty, but from what Gerrard says, it appears Tavernier will still be the one likeliest to take them.
