Four Reasons Why Rangers Would Be Wise To Snap Up Out Of Favour United Ace

The Ibrox Stadium.

Rangers were surprisingly linked with a move for Manchester United forward Jesse Lingard in the English press yesterday, along with Celtic and a number of Premier League teams.

The 27-year-old’s lack of match action has prompted speculation that he could move clubs during the January transfer window, either on loan or on a permanent basis.

Lingard is believed to be considering his options, and he is said to want to be given clarification on his future before deciding whether to leave Old Trafford. So, would he be a good fit for Rangers?

Press the next page as we go through four reasons why it could be an inspired move by Steven Gerrard.

Signing Lingard Is Low Risk

Due to his lack of match time, a loan deal is the likeliest option for the England international if United decide to trigger an extension to his contract for another season.

Lingard’s current deal expires in the summer so if the Red Devils don’t decide to take up their option, he could be available very cheaply in January or on a free transfer in the summer.

Another Option For The Right Hand Side

Gerrard has had to chop and change on the right-wing in recent months, with the likes of Kemar Roofe, Cedric Itten and Ianis Hagi all being employed there with varying degrees of success.

However, Lingard is perfectly suited for that role and, especially if Alfredo Morelos leaves in the summer, it would also allow Roofe to move into more central areas.

Lingard Is Hungry

The 27-year-old’s alarming drop in form over the past couple of years has been attributed to well documented personal problems, which the player says are now well behind him.

It means that Lingard now has a strong desire to get his career back on track. He was in England’s squad for the 2018 World Cup and, while a recall for the European Championships next summer is unlikely, he’ll be determined to get back in Gareth Southgate’s thoughts. There would be no better way of doing that than winning a title with Rangers.

He Offers Experience Others Lack

How many of Rangers squad have played in a World Cup semi-final and a Europa League final? Lingard does have experience at the highest level that others could tap into.

The winger may not be at the top of his game but having another player at your disposal, like Steven Davis, Allan McGregor and Jermain Defoe, who have pretty much seen it all, shouldn’t simply be overlooked.
