Four Facts About Bongani Zungu As Rangers Finally Close In On A Move For The South African International

The Ibrox Stadium.

Rangers are closing in on the signing of Amiens midfielder Bongani Zungu, according to multiple reports.

The Light Blues have been close to clinching a deal for the South African international before but it is thought that this time the 27-year-old will finally complete his protracted switch to Ibrox.

Zungu is expected to join the Scottish club on an initial loan deal, with the move set to be confirmed before tonight’s transfer deadline, barring any last-minute hitches.

We have profiled the midfielder’s career before but in this article, we will look at what he could bring to Rangers’ midfield. Press the next page to find out more about the player.

Zungu plays as a holding midfielder

The South African can play slightly further forward but, in general, he plays as a defensive midfielder, and will be competing directly with the likes of Glen Kamara and Ryan Jack.

The big difference between them and Zungu, though, is that the new signing will offer more energy. His all-action style should complement the players already in the squad, giving Steven Gerrard a different option.

He doesn’t score many goals

Rangers have been pursuing Preston’s Daniel Johnson, who is known as a playmaker, but Zungu is certainly a very different player to the Jamaican midfielder.

During his three years at Amiens, the 27-year-old has scored only two goals and contributed one assist. Injuries have had a slight impact on that figure as he has only made 59 appearances in that time.

Zungu will pick up a booking or two

Due to the position he plays in, the midfielder does regularly pick up yellow cards when trying to break up play. He has picked up 40 bookings in his 182 senior games, which is one in every 4.5 matches.

On the face of it, that isn’t a bad record, considering he is generally tasked with making tackles. Some are bound to be mistimed. You wouldn’t describe him as lacking discipline, though, as he has never been given a straight red. He has been sent off twice in his career for two bookable offences.

He is versatile

As mentioned already, he is ostensibly a holding midfield player, but he has been employed in a variety of roles in his career, including being played as a number ten, a forward and even on the wing.

Zungu’s understanding of playing in different positions demonstrates his footballing intelligence and that will hopefully allow him to integrate quickly into Gerrard’s team.
