Five Things You Need To Know About Bongani Zungu As Rangers Close In On £3.6m Deal

The Ibrox Stadium.

Rangers look set to seal a move for Amiens midfielder Bongani Zungu in the coming days, according to multiple reports.

The South African international could cost as much as €4m (£3.6m), which is a sizeable sum, so Director of Football Ross Wilson must be convinced he is worth the outlay.

Fans who are not regular watchers of Ligue One are unlikely to know much about Zungu and his career up until this point.

So what do we know about the 27-year-old? Press the next page as we go through five facts about the midfielder.

Zungu started out as a number 10

During his formative years at the University of Pretoria, he was ostensibly used as an attacking midfielder or a winger but after his move to Mamelodi Sundowns FC, he was converted into a holding midfield player.

Zungu was resistant to the change at first but he gradually developed his game to utilise his speed and athleticism to make a difference in the middle of the park.

He is league title winner already

Mamelodi Sundowns had gone through a number of barren years following the great success in the late 90s and early 00s. However, the arrival of Pitso Mosimane as manager changed their fortunes.

The South African brought Zungu to the club and they went on to win two South African league titles and one cup competition together.

Zungu had to overcome serious injuries

During his final season with the Sundowns, the midfielder suffered a broken leg which meant he barely played during the 2015/16 campaign.

Zungu moved to Europe the following year but after a brief spell with Vitoria Guimaraes in Portugal, he made the switch to Amiens in 2017. His first season was pretty successful but he again spent a sizeable portion of the 2018/19 season out of the team with a knee problem.

He could have left Amiens earlier

Zungu was very impressive when he returned to first-team action last campaign, and before the season was curtailed, he was subject of a bid from a Spanish club on the last day of the January transfer window.

The move did not materialise but with Amiens having been relegated to Ligue Two, the midfielder’s sale this summer was always very likely.

Zungu has been backed to succeed at Rangers

Speaking in recent days, the man who plucked him from obscurity to play for the Sundowns, Pitso Mosimane, says the Gers are making the right decision to sign the South African international:

“He knows the pressure at Rangers and what is expected there and he has the right mentality for the challenges ahead.”
