Barry Ferguson Names The Position That Should Be Rangers’ “Priority” In The January Window

Ex-Rangers captain Barry Ferguson believes his former club should try and sign a new striker when the transfer window opens next month.

The current Alloa Atheltic boss thinks that the Light Blues only really have one out-and-out striker in Alfredo Morelos, and he says going after another forward should be top of Giovanni van Bronckhorst’s list:

“(I’d sign) another centre-forward. I really like Kemar Roofe, I think he’s a top player but he just tends to suffer a niggly injury every three or four weeks. So you’re only real number nine is Morelos. I don’t know what’s happening with Jermain Defoe so I think a priority is a number nine.”

Ferguson is forgetting one player, Fashion Sakala, so combined with Roofe and Defoe, you would think that there is enough backup for Morelos in the squad as there is.

The centre-back position is undoubtedly more of a concern for van Bronckhorst. While Calvin Bassey has deputised superbly in the middle of defence, the Gers boss has been forced to play him there due to the dearth of other options.

Filip Helander is injured, while Jack Simpson is clearly not rated. With Leon Balogun going away with Nigeria for the African Cup of Nations as well, a new centre-half would seemingly be the likeliest addition in January.
