An Ex Chelsea Player, A Former Arsenal Target: 4 Cheap Centre Backs Rangers Could Sign In January Or Next Summer

The Ibrox Stadium.

With Connor Goldson seemingly running down his contract, Rangers boss Giovanni van Bronckhorst will be keen to bring in a new centre back.

Even if Goldson chooses to stay, though, the Light Blues are still short of options in the middle of defence so signing a player to fill that problem area will likely be considered.

Considering the Scottish champions will be working on a tight budget, Director of Football Ross Wilson may well be considering players whose contracts expire in the summer.

Press the next page as we look at four centre-halves who could be signed on the cheap in January or on a free transfer ahead of next season.

Danilho Doekhi (Vitesse Arnhem)

The Dutchman has been linked with Rangers over the past twelve months and his contract does expire at the end of the season. Van Bronkhorst will also, undoubtedly, be aware of his abilities.

Doekhi regularly captains Vitesse so he wouldn’t only replace Goldson in regards to being another centre back, but also in terms of his leadership qualities.

John Souttar (Hearts)

The Hearts centre-half has been in good form this season, and like Doekhi, he looks set to leave his club on a free transfer in the summer.

Celtic and a number of English Championship clubs are also pursuing Souttar so this could be a tricky one to pull off, unless the Gers are prepared to pay a fee for the 26-year-old next month.

Michael Hector (Fulham)

The former Reading and Chelsea defender is not getting the game time he wants at Craven Cottage with Tim Ream and Tosin Adarabioyo currently favoured as the first-choice centre-backs.

That shouldn’t deter Rangers, though, as Hector is a decent defender and, at 29 years of age, he still has a number of years left in his prime.

Eray Comert (FC Basel)

A bit of a left-field choice but the Swiss defender, who has seven caps at senior level, has yet to agree a new deal with Basel and could well be on the move either in January or at the end of the season.

Comert was actually linked with a move to Arsenal only eighteen months ago and he is just 23 years old so the Light Blues might consider taking a punt on him.
