4 Reasons Why Billy Gilmour Would Be Better Off At Rangers Than At Norwich

The Ibrox Stadium.

Former Celtic midfielder Kris Commons believes Rangers should try and sign Chelsea midfielder Billy Gilmour on loan in the January transfer window if his game time at Norwich continues to be limited.

The former Gers academy graduate joined the Canaries for the season back in July but manager Daniel Farke has not selected him in the starting eleven in the last four matches. Commons believes the 20-year-old could improve Steven Gerrard’s options in midfield:

“If Gilmour is still twiddling his thumbs in January, Rangers should get on the phone to Chelsea and at least ask the question. Some people might think it would be a backward step to return to his old club. But Rangers are a different animal now compared to when Gilmour left in 2017. I’m a big fan of Steven Davis and he’s been brilliant for Rangers. But I would have Gilmour ahead of him all day. That’s how good the boy is.”

It is an interesting point made by Commons so we have decided to look at the benefits of Gilmour making the switch to Ibrox. Press the next page as we list four reasons why the Scotland international would be better off at the Scottish champions.

1) Gilmour would be playing in a team who dominates possession most weeks

The midfielder is an excellent passer of the ball, and he excels when dictating possession from a deep-lying playmaker role. Norwich are, however, facing a relegation battle and they are always on the back foot.

If Gilmour moved to Rangers, he would be part of a side who generally dominate their opponents, much like Chelsea, so he could develop his game in a team who are much closer, in terms of characteristics, to his parent club.

2) He would gain more experience of European football

It must be said that the Light Blues have only won one of their three Europa League group games but, if they do make it into the knockout stages, Gilmour would have the chance of playing football at a very high level.

That experience could prove invaluable going forward as the midfielder learns to play against clubs from different countries with different styles of play.

3) Gilmour can learn from one of the best midfielders of his generation

Having a manager like Steven Gerrard to learn from would be tremendously beneficial for Gilmour, with the former Liverpool midfielder having gained unparalleled experience playing at the highest level.

Gerrard has played in Gilmour’s position so can impart his wisdom in that regard, but he will also undoubtedly have insights that can help improve the 20-year-old’s game over the long term.

4) He could return to his parent club with winners medals

While fighting a relegation battle can build resilience and character, Gilmour’s confidence could also be damaged if he stays at Norwich; especially if he remains on the bench.

At Rangers, he would be part of a team who could win trophies on multiple fronts this season. Going back to Chelsea with a winners medal or two could only be a positive.
