Who Is Francis Jacobs? Three Facts About The American ‘Wonderkid’ Who Rangers Have Signed

The Ibrox Stadium.

Rangers have completed the signing of Francis Jacobs from Orange County, with the 15-year-old expected to move to Ibrox later this year, according to The Athletic.

The website describes the player as a “wonderkid” following his swift rise to the professional ranks with the USL Championship team.

Rangers’ affiliation with Orange County means they have been able to secure Jacobs’ signature ahead of other teams. They have sent the likes of Danny Finlayson, Cammy Palmer and Matthew Shiels on loan to the American side over the past year and the relationship between the two clubs has undoubtedly played a key role in the Light Blues securing their latest signing.

Press the next page as we go through three facts about Jacobs and what fans should expect from him.

1) He is the youngest professional player in US football history

Jacobs signed on to professional terms with Orange County at the age of 14, making him the youngest ever player to have a full-time contract in the United States.

The previous record-holder was Freddy Adu who was a few weeks older before he put pen to paper on his first contract with DC United eighteen years ago.

2) Jacobs prestigious talent is well-known in youth football

The teenager has played at the well-regarded Alkass International Cup in Doha, which is known to be an Under 16 competition where future stars can make their name.

Jacobs impressed scouts at the tournament and that then led to him training with Rangers on trial back in December 2019.

3) He has already developed physically despite his young age

Considering he doesn’t turn 16 until March, it is surprising to many that Jacobs is actually ready to play in the professional game as most players that age need to develop physically to cope.

However, the American has already matured enough to be promoted to first-team level and not feel out of place, having played twice for Orange County’s senior side already. Whether Rangers fans will actually get to see him play for the Bears in the Premiership any time soon, though, it is unlikely.
