What Do Rangers Need To Do To Catch Celtic In The SPFL?

So far this season, it hasn’t been a bad year for Rangers by any means. Despite a weak start that led to the dismissal of Giovanni Van Bronckhorst, the Gers have been picking up form under Michael Beale.

Despite their upturn in form, Rangers are still very much second best in the title race. As things stand, the Light Blues are nine points behind Celtic in the SPFL.

So far, Celtic have only dropped four points in the league this season. If Rangers want to catch up to the Bhoys, not only will they need to put forth a near-perfect season from now on, they’ll also have to hope that Celtic experience a considerable dip in form.

One possibility, albeit with an outside chance, is that Celtic could lose their head coach – Ange Postecoglou. The Greek has been linked with a move to Leeds United – this being said, he isn’t currently among the favourites to get the vacant manager’s post at Elland Road.

Rangers also play Celtic in the Scottish League Cup final on February 26. A convincing win in this game could affect Celtic’s confidence and give the Gers a mental boost – it’s much easier said than done, though.

Rangers have played Celtic twice in the league this season so far, with one more game in the regular season to go. In the first fixture, the Gers suffered a humiliating 4-0 defeat, being 3-0 down at half time. They fared much better in the second fixture, drawing 2-2, but still couldn’t beat the Celts.

Therefore, all eyes will be on the Old Firm Derby on April 8 at Celtic Park. For now, all Rangers can do is try to keep pace with the green half of Glasgow – it’s not impossible.
