“We’ll See…” Sporting Director Hints That 3.5M Rangers Defender Could Make Summer Switch To Former Club

Malmo sporting director Daniel Andersson has revealed that the Swedish club may consider re-signing Rangers defender Filip Helander on a free transfer this summer.

The 29-year-old has been plagued by injuries since making the £3.5m move to Ibrox from Bologna in 2019, having made only 60 appearances over a four season period.

Helander started his career at Malmo before making the switch to Hellas Verona at the start of the 2015/16 season. His contract with the Gers expires at the end of the campaign and, when asked if the player could move back to Sweden, Andersson said:

“We have had little contact during these years, but we’ll see how the situation is. He is still quite young…Like I said, we’ll see. We keep in touch with all interesting old Malmo players.”

It’s been a very difficult time for Helander. The centre-half hasn’t played a game of professional football in nearly eleven months, with his last appearance coming in a 4-0 win over St Mirren in April last year.

Helander has been suffering with a foot injury that has caused him plenty of issues since his arrival in Scotland. The Swedish international has not been offered a new deal and his departure at the end of May is almost a dead cert.
