Van Bronckhorst Makes Promise About Aaron Ramsey After Controversial Braga Omission

Rangers manager Giovanni van Bronckhorst has assured supporters that Aaron Ramsey will get his fair share of game time over the coming weeks.

The Welshman did not get onto the pitch against Braga on Thursday evening, leading many to question van Bronckhorst’s judgement, but the Dutchman says he is trying to manage the former Arsenal player’s fitness:

“He’s had a difficult period. He’s playing more games lately for us and also for Wales, so I’m really happy that Aaron is back and available. Of course, we know his qualities. We have a lot of midfield players available now and this is the first game out of two, and next week’s going to be starting on Sunday with St Mirren, then of course with the second game of this tie and the cup semi-final.”

“It’s a busy period. Of course, the qualities of Aaron, we can use. We know his quality. You see what’s needed for games and you also have to do your game management and look also a little bit ahead. That’s what we’re doing right now. Aaron will for sure have his game time.”

It is an understandable explanation from van Bronckhorst, but it still doesn’t excuse the fact that he effectively opted against using his most talented player in one of the club’s most important games for years.

Of course, if the 31-year-old had gotten injured in that match, it would have also been seen as a bad decision to play him, so perhaps van Bronckhorst was on a hiding to nothing.

If Ramsey comes up with the goods against St Mirren tomorrow, and in the second leg versus Braga at Ibrox next week, then van Bronckhorst’s selection choices will be vindicated.
