Two Reasons For And Three Reasons Against Selling On £4.5m Rangers Star

Rangers may well look to sell Ianis Hagi on for a profit this summer if they take up their purchase option on the Romanian international, according to reports in the Scottish media.

The Light Blues are expected to snap up the 21-year-oldl for £4.5m when the transfer window opens, but with other clubs interested in the playmaker, an instant sale is said to be a possibility.

Lazio and even Real Madrid have been mentioned as possible destinations for Hagi, with the player being seen to have a big future in the game.

Press the next page as we look at the pros and cons of selling Hagi this summer.

FOR – The money will help fund the club

If Rangers were to sell Hagi for £9m to £10m, that extra money would certainly come in useful during a time when there is heavy pressure on the Gers’ finances.

The players and staff have agreed to defer 50% of their wages for the next three months, demonstrating the toll that the global health crisis is having on the club.

CON – Losing a talent who could bridge the gap to Celtic

If the Light Blues are to overhaul their Old Firm rivals at the top of the Premiership table, they need to keep players of the calibre of Hagi.

The Romanian has the vision and creativity to unlock stubborn defences; something which is lacking among the rest of the Rangers squad.

FOR – There’s no guarantee Hagi will fulfil his potential

While there has been a lot of talk surrounding the 21-year-old’s first few games for Rangers, after he scored against Braga and Hibs, there is no certainty he will be able to back up his good start.

Genk decided to offload him after just six months due to a number of unconvincing performances.

CON – He could be worth a lot more in the future

Selling someone before they have the chance to develop as a player could lead to Rangers losing out on a significant amount of money down the road.

What if he began scoring barrel loads of goals and provided numerous assists next season? Tied up with the fact that teams will likely have more money to spend in 2021, Hagi could be sold for a lot more than £9m.

CON – There is no guarantee he will be replaced

The current financial climate in Scottish football is pretty dire, and while Rangers are not said to be under huge pressure to sell players, there is unlikely to be a substantial transfer budget to buy new ones this summer.

If Hagi were to be sold, it is highly unlikely that the money from the sale will be reinvested in the squad in full. With that being the case, a replacement for the midfielder may not be signed.
