‘On Their Radar’ – Report Claims Rangers Could Challenge Celtic For Free Transfer Signing

Rangers have been scouting Kilmarnock goalkeeper Will Dennis, according to the Daily Record.

The Scottish newspaper claims that the Gers have sent scouts to watch the 23-year-old, who has impressed while keeping goal for Killie this season.

Dennis has only conceded 16 goals in 18 league appearances (having kept seven clean sheets) since joining on loan from English Premier League side Bournemouth last summer.

The Gers are not the only club keeping an eye on the Englishman, though, with the Daily Record reporting that Celtic are also interested, stating both Old Firm teams have him “on their radar”.

Dennis will be available on a free transfer next year

Despite being allowed to leave Bournemouth on loan back in July, it is believed that the Cherries have not extended his contract beyond the end of the season.

It means that Rangers, Celtic or another team could snap up Dennis for nothing when his current deal expires in June.

Why are Rangers keen on recruiting another keeper?

Jack Butland has had an outstanding first season at Ibrox after joining from Crystal Palace. However, Dennis is not being targeted by the Gers as a candidate for the No. 1 spot.

A backup option is likely to be needed next campaign, with Jon McLaughlin not expected to stay when his contract comes to an end in May. It is also believed that Robby McCrorie will be allowed to leave on loan so he can get more first-team experience.

With that being the case, going after Dennis does make a lot of sense. He has impressed during his brief stint in the Scottish Premiership so it wouldn’t be a complete gamble on an unknown. On top of that, the fact that he is available on a free means it would be a low-risk signing with very little downside.
