Three Stats That Show How Remarkable Rangers Start To The Season Has Been

The Ibrox Stadium.

As well as hitting eight past Hamilton Academical yesterday, Rangers secured their 12th clean sheet in only their 14th league match of the season.

Manager Steven Gerrard has managed to improve his team both in defence and attack this campaign and it has led to more consistent form and results.

With the Scottish club determined to win title number 55 and end Old Firm rivals Celtic’s hopes of winning another league trophy, it seems the Gers have managed to find the extra gear required.

Press the next page as we look at three stats that demonstrate how remarkable Rangers’ start to the season has been

Shots Against

Rangers have only conceded 20 shots on target in their 14 league games so far this season. That is five fewer than Celtic who have played two games less.

The record defensive stats that Steven Gerrard’s side are posting are, therefore, not simply the result of luck. Their 12 clean sheets have been based on restricting their opponents to very few shots, reducing the likelihood of a goalkeeping error or a long-range strike finding the net.

Fair Play League

Rangers are top of the Fair Play League after 14 rounds of fixtures. Despite having the best defensive record in the league, they have not resorted to fouls in order to clinch their sizeable number of clean sheets.

The Gers have picked up just 12 yellow cards (less than one a game) and no red cards in the Scottish Premiership this campaign. That is one fewer booking than Celtic. They would likely be bottom for fouls committed as well (having made just 156 fouls this season), but they are only fourth with the likes of Hamilton, St Mirren and Celtic having played fewer games.

Shots On Target

Steven Gerrard’s men have averaged 7.21 shots on target per 90 minutes in their 14 league matches so far this season. Their nearest rival is Celtic with 6.83, but the rest of the league averages between 2 and 4 per 90.

It shows that Rangers are not simply strong defensively this season. The Bears are a major threat in front of goal and an opposing goalkeeper can be expected to be tested on numerous occasions throughout the 90 minutes. Last campaign, they only averaged 6.31 shots on target, which demonstrates their improvement in the final third of the pitch.
