The Last Time Celtic And Rangers Met In A Scottish League Cup Final

Celtic and Rangers will come to blows once again on Sunday evening, as the Scottish League Cup final reaches its crescendo with a potentially fiesty Old Firm derby.

Of course, this isn’t the first time that the two teams have played each other in the Scottish League Cup final. In fact, they played each other at this stage of the tournament as recently as 2019.

While many players for Rangers are still in the squad, the Gers had a different manager back then – Steven Gerrard. Michael Beale, Rangers’ current manager, was the Liverpool legend’s assistant at that time. Additionally, Neil Lennon was in charge of Celtic.

When the game kicked off, Rangers immediately asserted their dominance over the Celts. They enjoyed the lions’ share of both possession and chances created – Celtic were soaking up the pressure, but only just.

When the two teams came out after half time, it appeared as though there could only be one winner. Then, against the run of play, Christopher Jullien prodded home a free kick and Celtic took the lead.

The Light Blues had an excellent chance to immediately level the scores, as Jeremie Frimpong brought down Alfredo Morelos in the box, conceding a penalty and receiving a red card for good measure.

However, Morelos’ penalty was poor – it was saved by Fraser Forster between the Celtic sticks, who was in inspired form during the game.

Rangers unleashed shot after shot at the Bhoys’ goal, but nothing could find its way past Forster – including a low effort from Joe Aribo that seemed destined for the back of the net.

Ultimately, the game finished 1-0, with Forster predictably being named man of the match. Rangers had seven shots on target to Celtic’s one – let’s hope that such heartbreak will not be on the horizon this year.
