The 4 Reasons Why Steven Gerrard Was So Keen To Snap Up John Lundstram

The Ibrox Stadium.

Rangers have confirmed that former Sheffield United midfielder John Lundstram has signed for the club on a three-year contract.

The 27-year-old had been heavily linked with a number of different teams, including West Ham, Burnley and Brighton but the Englishman says he was convinced to make the move to Ibrox after speaking with manager Steven Gerrard:

“I spoke with the manager and he sold the club to me, and I was just taken aback by his ambition, vision and drive.”

Lundstram has been on the club’s radar for a number of months so press the next page as we look at four reasons why Gerrard was so keen on securing his signature.

He’s a Scouser

This may seem like a simplistic explanation but Lundstram has even said himself one of the reasons that persuaded him to sign on the dotted line for the Gers was that he has a very similar background to Gerrard.

Lundstram came through Everton’s academy but he is a Liverpool fan, and he has a very similar work ethic and mental toughness as his new boss.

Lundstram is a leader

A year after he left Everton on a permanent basis for Oxford United in 2015, the midfielder was handed the captain’s armband following the departure of Jake Wright.

Lundstram helped cement Oxford’s status in English League One, with his team finishing eighth in their first campaign after being promoted from League Two.

He has been extremely successful at his last two clubs

As we have already mentioned, Lundstram was very successful in his two-year spell at Oxford but he would go on to greater heights at his next club Sheffield United.

The midfielder was signed by Blades boss Chris Wilder in 2017, with the Yorkshire club having made it back into the Championship. After finishing tenth in his first season, he helped United gain promotion to the top flight in 2019. He was also integral as his team finished 14th in the Premier League before their relegation last campaign.

Lundstram is a midfield enforcer

Chris Wilder’s Sheffield United side were built on hard work and a strong work ethic, with Lundstram the epitome of that with his hard tackling, no-nonsense style in the middle of the park.

The 27-year-old will bring that attitude with him to Rangers, and he will certainly add some extra steel in midfield which Gerrard will be keen to harness next season.
