Tavernier Reveals Which English Club Rangers Players Were Hoping To Face In The Europa League

Rangers captain James Tavernier says some of the squad were keen on facing Manchester United in the last 32 of the Europa League.

The Light Blues were drawn against Portuguese side Braga, but they could have played against the likes of United, Arsenal or Ajax in the knockout stages. Tavernier said they are still looking forward to the European tie in February:

“I know some lads maybe wanted Manchester United. Our job is to play Braga now. It is the first time that the club has played them, so that will be exciting.”

“They’ll have good players because to top a group with Wolves, who’ve been fantastic during their campaign, is impressive. Our aim is to get into the last 16 and see where it goes.”

“We believe if we play towards our best we will go toe-to-toe with anybody — so I have full faith with the boys and everything we do. I’m sure a trip to Old Trafford wouldn’t have been too bad — but I’m really looking forward to this.”

Braga did top their Europa League group ahead of the likes of Wolves and Besiktas so they shouldn’t be underestimated. However, at the same time, Rangers will not be fearing them.

Steven Gerrard’s side have already shown this season that they are more than capable of challenging some of the best sides in the tournament.

Their group, alongside Porto, Feyenoord and Young Boy, was the toughest in the whole competition, and they will certainly go into the two legs against Braga full of confidence that they can progress to the round of 16.
