Rangers And Celtic Join 8 Clubs In Race To Sign £3.5M Rated Ghanaian Star

Rangers and Celtic are among the ten sides interested in buying Hammarby defender Nathaniel Adjei, according to VoetbalKrant.com.

The Belgian website claims the two Old Firm clubs have been joined by five teams from England (Sunderland, Leeds, Middlesbrough, Preston North End and QPR), two from Belgium (Anderlecht and Standard Liege) and one from Italy (Bologna) in pursuing the player.

Adjei has only been in Europe for a couple of years, having arrived in Sweden from his native Ghana in 2021. He initially joined Hammarby’s feeder club on loan before making the switch permanent last year.

The 21-year-old has subsequently gone on to establish himself as a regular starter for Hammarby’s first team over the course of the 2023 season.

Where does Adjei play?

He initially broke into Hammarby’s starting lineup as a centre-back but he has also been deployed as a right-back on occasion, demonstrating his adaptability.

With Rangers needing to strengthen their numbers in the centre of defence, Adjei could be seen as a younger option who can provide cover for Connor Goldson.

Rangers will have to pay a sizeable fee to sign the centre-half

Despite only having made a handful of senior appearances in his career so far, Hammarby have reportedly slapped a big asking price on Adjei.

VoetbalKrant.com suggest a fee between €3m (£2.6m) and €4m (£3.5m) may be needed to prise the Ghanaian Under 23 international away from his current club. For that sort of figure, though, the Gers may feel that they can get a more experienced and proven player elsewhere.

Adjei is clearly a talented defender, considering the amount of interest being shown in him, so we shall have to wait and see who ends up securing his services.
