Rangers ‘Are Interested’ In Signing Cantwell’s Former Teammate Who Cost £20M

Rangers “are interested” in signing Everton centre-back Ben Godfrey, according to 90min.com.

The England international has fallen out of favour under current Toffees boss Sean Dyche, who has only handed him one brief cameo appearance in the Premier League this season.

A departure during the January transfer window is, therefore, a genuine possibility for Godfrey, who cost Everton £20m when he joined from Norwich City in October 2020.

Gers midfielder Todd Cantwell knows the defender well, with the two having played together at the Canaries, but whether he could persuade his former teammate to make the trip north of the border, it is up for debate.

Godfrey is being pursued by 5 different Premier League clubs

Despite not being able to break into Everton’s starting lineup this campaign, the 25-year-old is not exactly short of suitors, with Tottenham and Newcastle said to be leading the race for the player’s services.

90min.com also claim that Crystal Palace, Bournemouth and Burnley are weighing up moves for Godfrey.

How can Rangers afford to buy the player?

It may be the case that Philippe Clement‘s side are only willing to take Godfrey on an initial loan deal, which may reduce their chances of signing the centre-half, especially if Everton are looking for a sale.

However, there is a possibility that, if clubs are not willing to match the Toffees’ asking price for the player, they may consider offloading him on a temporary basis instead.

It is a position that the Gers could do with strengthening. John Souttar has a poor injury record, Ben Davies has been in and out of the starting eleven, while Leon Balogun is nearing the end of his career.

Godfrey could well strike up a good partnership with Connor Goldson if he were to make the switch to Ibrox in January.
