“It Would Be Wrong” – Barry Ferguson Urges Clement Not To Sign 175 Goal Striker In January

Ex-Rangers captain Barry Ferguson does not agree with fans and pundits who would back the club re-signing Alfredo Morelos.

The Colombian international is currently playing for Santos in Brazil but injuries have meant he has only played 76 minutes since joining the club at the start of September. Writing in his Daily Record column, Ferguson said the Gers would be looking backward if they did recruit their former player in January:

“As much as I might naturally like the idea, I also believe it would be the wrong move for my old club and new boss Philippe Clement who is trying to drive Rangers forward in a different direction.”

Morelos left Ibrox on a free transfer last summer after six years in Scotland, and the fact that he was allowed to leave under such circumstances kind of tells you all you need to know. Even though he has scored 175 goals in his professional career, his performances in the last couple of seasons with the Gers left a lot to be desired.

Rangers do need to find a goalscorer

While Abdallah Sima is certainly playing his part in getting on the scoresheet in recent games, the Senegalese international is not an out-and-out forward.

With the continued struggles that the likes of Cyriel Dessers and Sam Lammers are encountering, signing a new No.9 is something that will be seriously looked at by Clement and the recruitment team.

Who will be targeted in January?

Hearts’ Lawrence Shankland and Groningen’s Kevin van Veen have been loosely linked with transfers to the Light Blues in recent weeks but it must be said there have been very few reports of concrete interest in forwards.

Whether that will change as we head closer to the January transfer window, we shall have to wait and see.
