Rangers On Alert As Target’s Contract Talks Breakdown Over Wages

Rangers and Olympiakos are keeping tabs on Fenerbahce defender Martin Skrtel’s contract situation, according to reports in Turkey.

The Gers have previously been linked with a move for the Slovakian, who is a former Liverpool teammate of manager Steven Gerrard.

Skrtel’s contract at Fenerbahce expires this summer but the Turkish club have reportedly offered a one-year extension worth £25,000 a week.

The player is, however, insisting on a new two-year deal and is believed to be demanding £34,000 a week to stay at his current club.

Whether Rangers could satisfy Skrtel’s wage demands, it seems doubtful. Reports have suggested that the Scottish club pay an average weekly wage of just under £9,000 a week.

They would have to go four times over their average pay in order to secure the 34-year-old’s services this summer.

Rangers are on the lookout for a new centre-back after Joe Worrall returned to Nottingham Forest, while Gareth McAuley won’t have his contract renewed.
