A team of all-star Rangers legends will take on a World legends XI in a friendly exhibition match on March 26 at the Ibrox Stadium.
A host of former Gers favourites have been announced for the game – including Jermain Defoe, Saša Papac, Kris Boyd, Michael Mols, Jörg Albertz, Ronald DeBoer, Carlos Cuellar and Peter Lovenkrands. Barry Ferguson is also set to feature for the Rangers legends – he will captain the team.
The Rangers legends XI is certainly star-studded – but the World XI is also particularly formidable. So far, the former players confirmed to be playing in the World XI include Robin van Persie, Jaap Stam, Nwankwo Kanu, Joe Cole, Michel Essien and ex-Liverpool striker Robbie Fowler (who will take the captain’s armband).
The players in the World XI have played for a number of internationally reputable clubs in the past – including Chelsea, Arsenal and Manchester United.
Former Arsenal and Manchester United striker Robin Van Persie said on his excitement about the game: “I’m really looking forward to it. I made my European debut at [the] Ibrox, it was my first-ever match in Europe.
“The atmosphere gave me such a buzz, I was like ‘Wow!’ Ibrox has a fantastic atmosphere. It’s aggressive, if you know what I mean.”
It will be a great chance for Rangers fans to see their favourite stars wind back the years – as well as getting the chance to see a few former international superstars.
Rangers’ next competitive fixture will be held on Saturday, April 1, where the Gers will take on Dundee United at home.
