New Twist In Rangers’ Attempts To Snap Up Ex Chelsea Star On Free Transfer

Crystal Palace are preparing to offer Gary Cahill a new deal, according to reports in the English media.

At the weekend, it was suggested that Rangers were prepared to hand the former Chelsea defender a lucrative £35k a week contract in order to lure the 35-year-old to Ibrox.

However, Palace seem keen to re-sign Cahill, despite the centre-back having left Selhurst Park last month after failing to agree a new deal on terms that were acceptable to the player.

It was questionable anyway whether signing an ageing defender on top wages would have been the best use of the Scottish champions’ financial resources.

Cahill would have given manager Steven Gerrard some much-needed experience in European matches but the Gers’ squad is already stacked with centre-halves.

If the former England international were to join the Light Blues, he would have been competing for a first-team place alongside Connor Goldson, Filip Helander, Leon Balogun, Jack Simpson, Nikola Katic and George Edmundson.
