Kris Boyd Makes World Cup Claim As He Assesses Rangers’ Title Chances

Ex-Rangers striker Kris Boyd believes his former club’s main aim will be to stay in touching distance with Celtic heading into the World Cup next month.

Giovanni van Bronckhorst‘s side are in very poor form, with the draw against Livingston at the weekend allowing their Old Firm rivals to stretch their lead at the top of the table. Boyd feels that the title is still up for grabs with the four-point gap being very bridgeable:

“It’s four points at this moment in time. If you go back, 15 minutes before the end of the Hearts vs Celtic game, there is an opportunity for Rangers to maybe go and win the game and go top. It’s thin lines at this moment in time. I think because of the way Rangers have been playing, they will probably be saying to themselves, ‘Let’s hang on in there and get to the World Cup.”

The Gers desperately need the mid-season break to regroup. They have served up some quite appalling performances in recent weeks, so ensuring they don’t fall further behind Celtic in the last four fixtures is essential.

This weekend’s game against Aberdeen will certainly be a test and you have to say the matches versus St Johnstone, Hearts and St Mirren are not going to be straightforward either, considering how bad they have been playing. If they can hang on in there, though, as Boyd says, they can try and reset the mood ahead of the season’s resumption in December.
