“It’s Been A Sticky Start” Barry Ferguson Says He Was Expecting More From Two Of Rangers’ Summer Signings

Former Rangers captain Barry Ferguson wants to see more from John Lundstram and Fashion Sakala after they struggled to make an impression following their arrival at Ibrox in the summer.

Lundstram has failed to impress in midfield when given the opportunity by manager Steven Gerrard, while Sakala’s game time has been limited by injuries, and Ferguson wants to see both step up to the plate soon:

“It’s been a sticky start for them. I have seen enough of John Lundstram at Sheffield United to know he’s capable of being a right good player up here. But he’s going to have to go some to break into the strongest area of the team. He needs to get the head down, work hard and get to grips with the pressure.”

“No disrespect to Sheffield United, who were great for a year in the Premier League then had a difficult time last season, it’s nothing like what he’s now experiencing. Fashion Sakala has had a wee injury but is back in the squad and it’s important he shows soon why Rangers went all out to sign him.”

Ferguson appears to be more optimistic than most that Lundstram will come good. Fans have been scathing of the former Sheffield United player’s early performances for the Light Blues.

It has been harder to judge Sakala, who has missed four of the Gers’ nine matches this campaign due to fitness problems. The only start he was given was in the season opener against Livingston back in late July.

For both players, it is still early days and any judgements on their performances should really wait until we have seen more of them later in the campaign.
