“I Hope That Is Not The Case” Phillips Raises Major Concern Over Rangers’ Stalwart’s Future At The Club

Kevin Phillips believes Connor Goldson’s contract situation at Rangers may suggest that the defender is looking to speak with other clubs in the New Year.

The 28-year-old’s current deal at Ibrox expires at the end of the season and he will be able to sign a pre-contract agreement in January. With no sign of an extension with the Light Blues on the horizon, Phillips says he is concerned by the lack of news on a potential renewal:

“To me, it sounds like he wants to wait until January to see what other clubs will offer him. Why would you not have agreed a new deal by now when you have been negotiating for quite a while. It smells a little bit of outside interest.”

“Someone is perhaps in his ear telling him to hang fire. I hope that is not the case because I would like to see him stay there. But, if a deal has not been struck by now you start to wonder why. The only reason I can think is that people are telling him other clubs will come knocking in January.”

Goldson has been linked with a return to the Premier League over the past year, with West Ham said to have looked at making a bid for the former Brighton player.

However, there has been no real talk about interested clubs over the past few months, which either suggests that the Gers are closer to agreeing a new contract than Phillips claims or the player has yet to make any decision on his future.
