Gerrard Hints Summer Signing Could Return Against Benfica On Thursday

Rangers manager Steven Gerrard has revealed that midfielder Bongani Zungu is touch and go to be included in the matchday squad for the game against Benfica on Thursday.

The 28-year-old missed out on the 4-0 win over Aberdeen at the weekend after picking up a knee problem whilst away on international duty with South Africa, and Gerrard says that, although fans shouldn’t expect the player to feature, there is a chance of him being available:

“He has got a knock that we are assessing and checking out at the moment. We don’t think it is big so you could see him on Thursday against Benfica, hopefully. But don’t be surprised if he takes a little bit longer. But it is not a big problem, it is only days rather than weeks or months.”

Zungu has had a frustrating start to his career at Ibrox. The midfielder has managed just one substitute appearance so far, which came in the 8-0 win over Hamilton Academical earlier this month.

It is believed that the player needed time to regain match fitness after being frozen out before his loan move from Amiens. Another injury setback has further delayed his full debut but supporters will be hoping to get another glimpse of him later this week when the Light Blues try to seal qualification to the Europa League knockout stages.
